2021 Summer Camps

It is with great excitement and anticipation that we reveal our 2021 summer camps! We are eager to welcome campers back to Crown Center to experience the joy and camaraderie that only a live musical experience can generate. We believe in the power of theater to build self-confidence, creative thinking, empathy and caring. Our camps are designed for all experience and abilities. Camp sizing may be more limited than usual, so enroll early and guarantee your spot in the most engaging and innovative musical experiences in Kansas City!

Summer Camps are $175 per camp

2 week camps are $350

BROADWAY BOUND AUDITION CAMP

June 7 – 18: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Grades 6-12)

One of our most popular Camps!

Need to know the ins and outs of what makes for a dynamite musical theater audition? Maybe you’ve never auditioned at all, and just don’t know where to start? No matter, this 2-week intensive walks through the ins and outs of the audition process – from selecting material, prepping for dance calls, gaining confidence and more! We’ll choose and coach  songs and monologues, build an audition book, work on cold readings, and create a professional resume.  The camp will conclude with a live audition for professional directors and music directors giving you a chance to use everything you’ve learned.

CAMP HAMILTON, jr. (session 1)

UNDER THE SEA

June 7 -11: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Grades K – 5)

Day trip to SEA LIFE included!

Join us as we take a deep dive into some water-filled musical theater fun! We’ll sing and swim our way through music from The Little Mermaid, SpongeBob Squarepants, and more, as we discuss the themes of finding our place in a big world and learning to love ourselves. The course ends with a swim-tastic final performance and also includes a day trip to visit SEA LIFE AQUARIUM!!

DISNEY ROYALTY

June 14 – 18: 9am – Noon (Grades K – 5)

Princes, Princesses, Kings and Queens Unite in this camp which explores  your favorite Disney royalty! Our time together will be filled with crafts, meaningful lessons, a royal photo shoot and of course the music that makes it all so amazing! We will bring the magic to life with a final performance that you can share with your family and friends!

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!  Discover the wizarding world of Harry Potter, Newt Scamander and more on our search for spells, fantastical creatures and magical mischief! We’ll make our own wands, get sorted (!!!) create our own fantastic beasts and learn music from magical shows in musical theater! We’ll demonstrate our magical music, dance and creative spells with a final performance for friends and family under the stage lights.

FEEL IT IN YOUR SOUL

June 21 – 25: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Grades K – 5)

Based on the new hit movie SOUL, we’ll be using jazz and jazz-inspired musicals to help uncover our “spark” and maybe even think about our life’s true purpose.  While singing and dancing to some of the best jazz standards from musical theatre we will discuss what makes us want to perform and how to appreciate the everyday wonders that are around us.  The week will conclude with an award-worthy live performance.

BROADWAY FAIRY TALES

June 28 – July 2: 9am – Noon (Grades K – 5)

Once upon a time…musical theater was filled with fairy tales! In this session we will explore the characters within Broadway’s spectacular fairy tales, sing amazing songs, and have some magical projects! Featuring music from Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Into The Woods and more, this session will conclude with a final performance fit for the royal family!

MAD PROPS

June 28 – July 2: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Grades 6 – 12)

If you have the crafty, creative, artisan spirit, then this camp is for you! Our time together will include exploring the creative process behind the wonderful world of prop making. We’ll make prop pies that you might find in the musical WAITRESS or SWEENEY TODD. We’ll discover how to make fake blood, and spend some time doing foam carvings and sculptures. To top it all off, you’ll get a first hand look at the shop at MTH where we make all our sets and props!

BABY YODA CAMP

July 5 – 9: 9am – Noon (Grades K – 5)

Do you have what it takes to train with the masters?  More importantly, do you pledge to protect what matters to you, including the child?  Then we need you!  Join us as we wield the force with some of the best sci-fi musicals of all time including We Will Rock You, Starmites, Starlight Express, and Little Shop of Horror.  Our time will be filled with crafts (lightsabers, anyone?), singing and movement which will end with a performance that even the dark side would love.

Turn your insecurities into something you are proud to call YOURS. Through the music of Mean Girls, Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman, and more, we’ll explore how to love the skin you’re in! Lessons focus on strength, inclusion, and self-advocacy while exploring how to find confidence in yourself and find your own voice through the arts. Our session will conclude with a final performance party where you can share all that you’ve learned!

Only good vibes in this session full of teenage-driven musicals from Be More Chill, Dear Evan Hanson, Mean Girls, The Prom, Wicked and more! Students will sing and stage some of their all-time favorite songs from Broadway’s hit teen musicals. SING!

July 19 – 23: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Grades 6 – 12)

For the older kids who are all about increasing their skills as a vocalist! Led by MTH Manager of Education, Dr. Robert McNichols Jr., campers will learn successful ensemble singing, part singing, and participate in vocal masterclasses. They’ll also engage in pedagogy activities to learn how the voice works, and over the course of the week receive 2 private voice lessons. The final day of camp includes a brief recital as well!

PRACTICALLY PERFECT POPPINS

July 26 – 30: 9am – Noon (Grades K – 5)

CAMP FULL!

This session is sure to be supercalifragilistic…oh, you get the idea! We will explore how Mary makes the impossible possible, discover how the classic movie was reinvented for Broadway, and delve into the new hit sequel.  Adventure awaits as we sing music from Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns and create some astounding projects. It all ends with a final performance you can share with your family, friends and favorite chimney sweep!

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

August 2 – 6: 12:30 – 3:30pm (Adults, 18+ w/ special needs)

4 SPOTS LEFT!

Specifically curated and designed for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, this camp will dive into the musical theater world of entertainment. Campers will be immersed in voice classes where they will learn vocal warmups and selected songs. Campers will also have 15 minute classes called “Theater Break” where they’ll sharpen their acting skills by playing theater games and improv. Finally, campers will learn the “Art of Dance” through movement. The week culminates in a final presentation for family and friend entitled “That’s Entertainment!”

Participant must be able to communicate needs and desires and be independent in toileting. For individuals with significant behavioral issues, please email MTH Manager of Education Programs.

2021 Summer Camp Registration

* Summer Camps are $175/participant
* Summer Camps have a minimum of 2 instructors per camp
* 2021 Summer Camps have a max capacity of 12 students/camp.
* A limited number of scholarships are available for those in need. Please find the scholarship application HERE.

Education Payment Policy & Refunds

  • Payment is due in full at the time of enrollment in order for the camper to be ensured a spot in the camp of choice. If waitlisted, no payment or deposit is due until a spot becomes available.
  • Prior to April 1, 2021 all tuition is fully refundable.
  • For cancellations between April 1, 2021 and May 1, 2021, we will refund 90% of the camp fees.
  • For cancellations between May 1 – May 31, we will refund 50% of the camp fees.
  • Beginning June 1, there are no refunds for camp fees, but camps may be transferred to another individual and must be used for a 2021 camp.

The seasonal nature of our program precludes any refund, camp credit, or reduction for late or non-arrival, early withdrawal or student cancellation within two weeks of the program for any reason. Students sent home in violation of our rules, for medical reasons, or at the discretion of the student, family, or MTH will receive no refund.

MTH COVID Policy & Action Plan

To help slow the spread of COVID-19 and safeguard our staff and visitors, Musical Theater Heritage (MTH) has created an action plan based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), City of Kansas City Health Department, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance, highlighting the responsibilities of the Board of Directors, MTH Staff and Volunteers, and outlines steps being taken to address the COVID-19 threat. MTH is the proud recipient of Missouri’s Art Safe re-opening certification. A summary MTH’s action plan can be found HERE.
